Communities
Rochester offers an intriguing mix of stimulating urban living with extensive historic connections. In fact, it has more locations on the National Register of Historic Places than any other city its size. Rochester was also a 1998 recipient of the All-American City award as recognition of its status as a great place to live. Many of its communities offer ‘small-town’ type settings with all the necessities close by.
In the year 2000, the Enterprise Foundation announced the launch of the Rochester Community Development Collaborative. This partnership was committed to energizing the neighborhoods of Rochester with $4.5 million in hopes of producing a new-and-improved Rochester. The project focused on revitalizing urban housing markets, family-friendly neighborhoods and centers of commercial activities to keep residents shopping in the neighborhoods where they live. This urban focus was to produce quality neighborhoods for all families.
The City of Rochester is rich in its heritage that is expressed throughout its communities. The city owes its existence to the immigrants who made it what it is today and many of these nationalities are still represented. Whether it is in the descendants of these immigrants or through the wonderful delicacies offered throughout the area, the Slavic, German, Polish, Jamaican, Hispanic and Turkish are strongly represented throughout Rochester communities.
